I finally went to see "Milk" tonight with Ed and it was OUTSTANDING. Ed and I were both sobbing and sniffling by the end, which says alot b/c Ed does not cry.
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man to be voted into a major public office. His unyielding courage inspired (and "recruited" haha) people everywhere to join together, but to never blend in. The relentless efforts that he and his supporters made to provide civil rights to the GLBTQ community despite the work of Fundamentalist Christians who were in great power and sweeping the nation stripping people of basic rights and scaring the nation into following their ridiculous propaganda is truly inspiring, yet unnerving. We've come so far, and lately with such things as the passing of Prop 8, and Obama's selection of a Fundie who tries to "fix" gay people for his invocation speaker we seem to be paralleling the issues people like Harvey Milk and others have fought so hard for, and even lost their lives for. In the 70's it was the Fundies pushing Prop 6 (and thankfully lost), and now they pushed and won Prop 8. How could this happen? How could we be recreating history in such a backwards way in a time where we're supposed to be believing in change? We need to fight. I hope Obama has some hidden agenda for selecting whacko Rick Warren, but until that comes to fruition I am nervous and skeptical and ready to fight back.
